Department Aims
The Science Department at Willingdon School aims to provide a broad and balanced curriculum accessible to all pupils, regardless of ability, gender, race or culture, building on the primary curriculum in a continuous and progressive manner. We aim to provide specialist, well resourced facilities that are both safe and stimulating for the pupils to develop their scientific knowledge and understanding and to maintain their level of enthusiasm. We aim to develop in the pupils problem solving and investigative skills as well as informed
attitudes. In order to reach their full potential the pupils must have access to a challenging and varied curriculum, tailored to individual and group needs. The pupils should be encouraged to put knowledge and understanding of the application of Science in a social and ethical context and to make evaluations.
In order to achieve these aims the department intends to make optimum use of available resources and to fully involve all staff so that ideas and individual expertise can be pooled. We aim to build on existing resources and to review current practice in order to allow development to take place
The Science Department
All students at Willingdon Community School study a balanced course in Science at both Key Stages 3 and 4. At Key Stage 3 all pupils take 7 hours of science per fortnight, following schemes
of work written by the department. These schemes of work follow the new KS3 curriculum and have a greater emphasis on personal, learning and thinking skills. Groups are taught by one
teacher. At Key Stage 4 all pupils take 9 hours of science per fortnight, following OCR’s 21st Century Science syllabus or a Science BTEC. Set 1’s are studying separate sciences worth 3 GCSE’s, set 2’s and 3’s are studying Core and Additional Science, and set 4’s take BTEC level 2 Extended Certificate. The department also offers a BTEC First Certificate in Countryside and Environment. The department consists of 8 full time teachers and is supported by 2 full time and 2 part time technicians. The department consists of 8 well-equipped laboratories, 6 with their own preparation rooms attached.
