Results
The English department has made significant progress over recent years. In 2009 67% of students gained A*-C in English GCSE. In 2010 72% of students gained A* - C in GCSE English.
Rooms and Facilities
The English team work in the newest part of the school with six light and airy classrooms looking out on to the Downs. All six classrooms now have interactive white boards and have Promethean software installed. These are used interactively to engage and stimulate learners. There is a small computer room, where students are able to work in lessons. The department works closely with the Learning Resources Centre and students in year 7 have fortnightly library lessons to encourage them to use the facility and read widely.
Teaching and Learning
Students are divided into two halves of the year. They are taught English in ability sets. In key stage 3 and 4 there are 4 ability groups on both halves of the year.
In key stage 3, the department uses APP to assess students work and provide purposeful targets for students to make progress. All schemes of work have been created to incorporate the English Framework and Personal Learning And Thinking Skills.
In Key Stage 4, Year 10 students are currently following the OCR GCSE course.
Extra Curricular
In key stage 4, students are offered a comprehensive programme of GCSE catch – up and revision sessions, in order to prepare them for the final exam. Students are also given opportunities to go on theatre trips. Last year students were taken to The Globe and The Imax cinema in activities week. This year students are going to watch Much Ado About Nothing in The West End. The department also participated in a hugely successful BBC News Day in March this year. The school Librarian has taken groups out to book talk morning organised by the Schools Library Service and a group of students participate in the Southern Schools Book Award each year.
